What the work is like

Lyft matches drivers with nearby passengers. The work includes reaching the pickup, confirming the rider, and completing the trip. Where you end a ride matters if the next pickup is far away or local airport rules affect where you can queue.

Lyft Black and Black SUV

These premium ride types use eligible black vehicles with black leather interiors. Lyft’s driver guide lists a minimum 4.95 rating along with experience and vehicle requirements. Check the eligible vehicles for your city, then check ride types in the Lyft Driver app.

Boston, Orlando and Chicago limit Black and Black SUV rides to commercial livery drivers. Fleet drivers should check pay and insurance terms with the fleet manager. Lyft’s premium driver guide gives no U.S. hourly average specifically for Black rides.

Lyft Teen

A guardian can arrange for a teen ages 13–17 to use a linked Lyft account for trips such as school or practice. Eligible drivers see a Teen passenger label and use a four-digit PIN to start the trip. Lyft lists launch markets including Phoenix, Dallas–Fort Worth and Philadelphia.

In participating markets, eligible drivers can switch Lyft Teen on or off in Driving Preferences. Lyft’s driver guide lists a $1 teen passenger bonus after a completed Teen ride.

Earnings

Gridwise’s comparison places Lyft at $22.45 per active work hour. That measure covers time on a trip, including travel to pick up the rider. It omits the gap before the next request. In its 2025 driver sample, the median gross hourly figure was $20.38.
